About Straits Times Index
SG30 tracks the Straits Times Index index. An index level summarises the movement of a group of shares according to its own calculation and weighting rules; it is not the purchase price of an individual share. A rising or falling index therefore does not mean every constituent company moved in the same direction.
Interpreting Straits Times Index requires attention to its constituents and weighting method. One company can have a different influence from another. Tradable instruments referencing the same index may also have different contract specifications, so their quotes should not automatically be treated as identical.
